The limitations of fur as an
insulator
There isn’t
anything magical about fur. It is an insulator that slows
heat transmission, similar to the insulation in the exterior
walls of your home. The insulating value of fur decreases as
its thickness is reduced. Since small animals generally have
thinner fur than larger ones, they are more susceptible to
the cold. They also have more body surface area for every
pound of weight, which magnifies this problem.
